Frequently Asked Questions

Why a new Central Library?

The current Central Library located at 223 South Main was constructed 50 years ago. Back then the city population was less than 250,000 and there was no such thing as a personal computer. The Wichita Public Library has adapted over the decades to fulfill the technololgical needs of our growing city, but the outdated setup and other limitations of the current building make certain improvements either impossible or too expensive.

When Will It Be Open

This is probably the question we get asked more than any other! Our target is spring of 2018. Look for a public announcement of the grand opening February of 2018.

But What About The Current Building

The current Central Library building is the property of the City of Wichita. The City Council will make the decision on the future of the building.
